Literal

literal
- late 14c., from L.L. literalis "of or belonging to letters or writing," from L. litera "letter." Sense of "verbally exact" is attested from 1599. Literally is often used erroneously to indicate "what follows must be taken in the strongest admissible sense," which is opposite to the word's real meaning.
